Fran grew up in a storytelling family and learned her skills babysitting for three brothers and a sister. Trained as a biologist, she switched to storytelling in 1978 but still teaches about the natural world through stories. She and Hiroko Fujita were awarded NSN's International Storybridge award in 2003 for their work on both sides of the Pacific.
