about

I play autoharp music while I tell this story, but it can be told without an instrument. There is also a short song which I sing many times in the story. Listeners learn the song after hearing it a few times; then they can sing with me. It is a very cool and calm story, with a beautiful sound.

I learned this story from my mother, who had found it in a book. It explained why one kind of wild duck ("Shingebiss") doesn't migrate south in winter. A Chippewa elder told me that he did not recognize this story, so I thought maybe it was "fakelore" composed by a white person who liked Indian stories. But recently I found sources that say it is an authentic Ojibwa legend. NOTE: I have changed the main character from a male duck to an Indian woman!

American children feel that this story is deliciously scary, but they like the ending. Girls and women, especially, like the strength of Singebiss.
