about

In the German version of this story, the city is called Bremen. Bremen people are very proud of this animal story. They have a statue of the animals preparing to sing for the robbers. Bremen was an important seaport; many European immigrants came to America from Bremen. But other versions of the story were told in England, Italy, and other places. Of course they use the names of other cities. You can change the city name too.

I tell this story with autoharp sound effects and music, but it works very well without an instrument. Children like to help with the animal voices. Usually I ask one quarter of the audience to help sing with the donkey, the second quarter with the dog, the third with the cat, and the fourth with the rooster. It is important to stay in control, so before we begin, I teach hand signals to START and STOP the singing. They especially enjoy making a terrible noise when all the animals sing together.

NOTE: Sometimes children are afraid of a harmless thing because they do not understand it. I like this story because children can laugh at the foolish robber who misunderstands the animals.

I also like this story because the old animals, when they could not do their first jobs, found new careers making music. I did that too.
