Adapted from Hiroko Fujita's tale from Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. In Fujita-san's story, Buddha approached the different animals to find spare tails for the lizards. I decided the lizards could ask for themselves.

You can have the lizards ask a different variety of animals whose tails are beautiful or useful. Children like to play the animal parts when acting out the story.

But when I see nations fighting each other because of something that happened long ago, I think: They are losing their tails because of an old story which others have forgotten.
