about

I learned this story from Oklahoma storyteller Linda Levy. We think the original idea came from an African or African-American story, but we have never found this version in print.

The dog noises (barking, howling) were suggested by my brother, Indianapolis storyteller Ken Oguss. I added gestures. When telling the story to small children, I sometimes use a small toy dog and cat to illustrate the actions of the story.

American children usually help me sing the song for the dog or the cat. Some children like to do the gestures with me. They especially like to howl with the dog at the end.
